This allows you add back in a little (or however much you want) of the noise / background sounds in the original audio, which can help your recording sound a bit more natural. The Floor (or Range) function controls how much signal passes through the gate even when it’s closed. How-to Use a Noise Gate in 8 Steps Step 1: Patch your gate inline Here’s a handy step-by-step guide to show you how I cleaned my recording up.įor this example, I’ll show you how I gated the snare from the example above, but the same concepts can be applied to any recording or instrument. This will make the snare a lot easier to work with in the mix, and will respond better to effects and processing later on. The snare is more isolated and the bleed of the other drums is gone. Here’s the snare after applying a noise gate: There’s a lot of unwanted signal in that recording, so it’s less than ideal for applying effects and other processing. Here’s and example of a rough snare recording with no gating: This use of gating can be applied to any recording or sample you’re working with. Once your gate is correctly applied, your snare sound should be isolated from other sounds in the recording and thus more easily manipulated in the mix. So why is this bad? Well, if you want to make edits or add FX to just your snare, you need to isolate that snare in the recording without any of the other drums’ transients. Even with directional mics, you’ll still pick up some of the other drums (plus any room noise) in your recording. When you’re recording live drums, you’ll likely have the whole kit playing/recording simultaneously in a single room. Seeing (and Hearing) Noise Gates In ActionĪ classic use of gating is cleaning up a snare recording. ![]() Here is what a standard gate looks like in Ableton Live: It’s also sometimes called the Floor depending on your plugin or gear. Rather than eliminating the noise entirely, it can be controlled and limited. Range (measured in dB): The amount (dB) of signal the gate allows to pass even when it is closed.Release (measured in mS): Time that it takes for the gate to fully close after the signal falls below the threshold.Hold (measured in mS or S): A minimum amount of time that the gate must stay open after the threshold is exceeded.Attack (measured in mS): Time that it takes for the gate to open fully once the threshold is exceeded.Threshold (measured in dB): Specifies the point at which the gate opens.Open and Closed are the basic modes of operation, but the signal can be further shaped and structured by the different controls of a gate. Simply put, your threshold setting determines what sound gets in and what sound does not. When the signal’s amplitude is greater than the amplitude set by the threshold the gate opens and lets that volume of signal pass freely through the gate. When the signal’s amplitude is less than the amplitude set by the threshold the gate stays closed and keeps that range of signal out. Whether the gate is open or closed to a specific volume is determined by the threshold. When the gate is closed, the audio is attenuated. When the gate is open audio passes through freely. Think of gates working like, well, real gates! Gates have two basic modes: Open and closed. Gates get rid of all that and let you shine! So now that you know what they are, and what they fix, here’s how to use them… Other instruments caught in the recording.Gates work well on any sounds in a signal that may be quieter than the desired sound you are capturing (like a snare, or a tom). So compressors make the loud parts of a signal quieter (more regular throughout) whereas gates make the quieter parts even more quiet (removing unwanted noise). ![]() However, where compressors attenuate, or lower, any volume that goes above the threshold, gates attenuate any volume that falls below the threshold. Gates and compressors work on similar principles: they both affect volume in relation to a threshold (measured in dB). Gates and compressors, like all dynamic processors, work specifically on the amplitude, or volume, of an audio signal-not the pitch. Noise Gates are part of the same dynamic processors category as your other common mixing tools like compressors, limiters, and de-essers.Īudio Gates come in many different forms: From free plugins to expensive hardware and everything in between. Noise gates lower the volume of a signal when that volume drops below a certain level, called a threshold. Noise Gates, also known as gates or audio gates, are a type of dynamic processor that controls the volume of an audio signal. ![]() ![]() ![]() Territories, set up trade routes and erect the necessary buildings so that you may rake in more resources, increase productivity or recruit the units that will ensure victory. Regardless of the strategy you employ, the campaign is played out across a map of Europe, with you and your Al neighbours taking turns to shuffle armies between Choosing one of five warring nations (England, Austria, Prussia, France or Russia), the aim is to secure the most victory points before the sands of time run out, whether by military domination, trading and research, peaceful diplomacy, or very probably all of the above. The first of these is, of course, the Napoleonic era during which the central campaign is set - specifically 1791 -1830, a period when most of Europe seemed to be at war pretty much all of the time. Similarly, just because IG is in all but name a Total War game, it would be a mistake to just dismiss it as being derivative, as Imperial Glory often manages to counter the Total War series with a small feature or addition makes it ev so-slightly distinct. That's not to belittle either game ( Praetorians was an underrated cracker, in my opinion), just an undeniable fact. Attack Of A Cloneīranding Imperial Glory a clone may be unfair, but it's accurate, for without The Creative Assembly having done all the groundwork, IG would in all likelihood have turned out much like Pyro's previous RTS offering Praetorians. While a handful of games have in part been inspired by Total War, Pyro's wholesale lifting of the Total War concept is the first to be, well, total. However, despite the awards and the ceaseless acclaim, the appearance of Imperial Glory must surely be the ultimate accolade, for as all developers know, you've only truly made it when everyone else starts borrowing your ideas. Its games have proved to be immediately accessible and deeply engrossing, fusing 2D turn-based and 3D real-time strategy into a vast and cohesive whole, that has earned the UK studio critical and commercial success. Over the course of three games, Total War developer The Creative Assembly has established itself as the most consistent and innovative company in the strategy sphere. Hopefully, we'll have more play of the preview code in next issue - which should give you just enough time to sit down and conquer Rome a second time. Whatever the outcome of the forthcoming battle, Pyro is on target to release the game before the spring - and the team is currently tweaking the Al and balancing the units and strategies of the five playable nations. "Some people like Civilization more than Age Of Empires," says Vinos, presumably meaning Total War can be likened to the former and Imperial Glory the latter. However, it appears Pyro is aiming to provide a faster-paced game, where tactical prowess and technical innovation are more important facets of leadership than managing a civilian population. ![]() Unlike Rome, Imperial Glory's turn-based campaign will be set across strictly-bordered regions (a la Shogun/Medieval), which may seem a regressive step after sampling Rome's more tactical method of grand warfare. Although the game features a nowįamiliar blend of turn-based campaigning and real-time 3D, the major difference is that rather than sword and arrow, the currency of carnage here is lead shot and shrapnel, fired across both land and sea. The line being referred to is of course a histoneal timeline, for Imperial Glory is set squarely during a period when established European empires were squabbling over new and old world alike. I think that Rome improves Medieval, and Medieval improves Shogun, but Imperial Glory is on a different line. "To be honest," says Pyro's communications manager Inigo Vinos, I don't think Imperial Glory will improve the (Total War) formula - it's a different composition. Imperial Glory presents a glorious technicolour Napoleon-era strategy romp with detailed troops going at each other with state-of-the-art (at this time in history) muskets and cannons. Although Spain's premier developer is dismissive of any comparisons between Impenal Glory and The Creative Assembly's magnificent Rome: Total War, it clearly has plans to ambush the RTS superpower before it can gather its troops for an expansion pack. Pyro Studios, responsible for Praetorians and the Commando franchise (see left) is understandably quite excited about its forthcoming strategy project Imperial Glory. ![]() Bear activity tends to be more toward the end of the season (Fall), but if you're not responsible, expect to have a visitor, especially if you're by the creek (West side of the campground).
